On a late Saturday morning, I turned on the TV and settled to watch Ronnie’s Animal Cracker whilst taking out my hair extension. Not usually my kind of programme, but I was captivated. This episode covered topics ranging from miniature horse breeders, dogya (Yoga for dogs) and creative dog grooming, which got my attention.

Creative dog grooming has been described as bizarre by some, but I was intrigued by the art element and also concerned about the harm the ink or dye might cause the dogs, So I decided to investigate some more, which I thought I’d share with you.

The dye used to create these outlandish creations is vegetable based and causes no harm to the dogs and are normally washed out after the show. Phew! That’s good to know. According to The National Association of Professional Creative Groomers they provide groomers with the necessary information to understand and effectively utilize creative grooming techniques in the salon as well as the competition ring without compromising the comfort or safety of the animal involved. Glad appropriate safety measures are in place.

Creative dog grooming is about showing your grooming skills and also taking it to another level, where the groomers show their creative side in competitions.

These competitions started off in the USA. One of the longest running competitions is the Creative Styling Tournament which takes place as part of the annual Groom Expo in Hershey, Pennsylvania  and has been running for over 25 years. In this competition the winner could win up to $2,500. These competitions  have now been taking place in the UK for a few years as well, like those competitions held by the English Groomers Group.

So much planning goes into these competition, from coming  up with the most over the top creation with different camouflage of colours to the dog groomers getting involved in the act as well, by dressing up in a similar themes to what they’ve created on the unassuming dogs.

Below is a Salvador Dali inspiration from the Ronnie’s Animal Cracker show I was watching, which did not quite go to plan, but her design turned out ok. The Groomer’s design included the design of Dali’s face to be put on the dog, but the dog moved when it was being applied, which was hilarious to watch:)
