As the Art world turns to London for Frieze, we decided to visit alternative offerings during London Art week. First of our alternatives, was attending the preview evening at The other art fair and Moniker at the iconic Old Truman Brewery in the East end of London, which hosts numerous art and fashion events throughout the year. The Old Truman Brewery was founded around 1666 and used to be one of the largest brewers in the world at the end of the 19th Century.

The Other Art Fair will provide 130 emerging artist with the opportunity to showcase their work to art collectors, art lovers, gallery owners and art critics. This year’s fair was juried by Anita Zabludowicz (collector and philanthropist), Omar Kholeif (writer & curator), Polly Morgan (artist) and Sophie O’Brien (Senior Exhibitions Curator at the Serpentine Gallery).

This fair fits nicely into the affordable art category with creative pieces starting from as little as £60 from both local and international artist. This will provide everyone with the opportunity to own a piece of art, which is part of our ethos. The fair is artist led, with most artists present to discuss their work. We were able to spoke directly to the artists on the psychology behind the art, the medium used  and their source of inspiration. We saw a variety of work on display ranging from photography, installations, mixed media and sculptures.

There was a huge turnout for the preview evening, with a buzzing atmosphere, DJ on decks, Dirty Burger Pop up for refuelling and Crate Brewery Bar to quench your thirst, to name a few.  The fair is worth visiting to appreciate the talented works of art on display and may also serve as an interesting adventure for kids, with an Art Trail for 3 -10 years old and an art creation at the end of the trail for the kids.

The Old Truman Brewery is situated near brick lane with a variety of Indian and Bangladesh restaurants to enjoy. You may also visit the whitechapel art museum nearby. The next edition of The other Art Fair will be taking place  on 23-25 April 2015.  Here are a few of our favourites from the show.

Robert A Stuart – A self-taught fine artist, who used to be a software developer. Robert has sold numerous paintings to private individuals and  has commissioned works.

Panos Antonopoulos  – A conceptual artist, whose work we found thought provoking and challenges the status quo.

Ed Liddle – We love these folded, squeezed, pushed, pulled canvases mounted on a stand as sculptures. They can also be customised to be mounted on a wall.

We also love the work of French Artist Miguel Buceta who is based in Paris
