Serigne Dia (Che) is a self-taught artist and has been painting for over 17 years. He trained as a carpenter, but after falling on hard times he resulted to petty crime, which led to him spending since months in Jail.

It is during his time in prison that he decided to turn his life around and focus on learning how to paint and develop his art form.

Most of his work has a depiction of the female form, which to him serves a reminder of his is first wife who died mysteriously. Dia also paints landscapes and portraits, with his distinctive style similar to the markings used in Aboriginal art. His main form of media is Gouach en reléve.

In the pieces exhibited in this collection, Dia draws inspiration from the spirit of his first wife and combines it with masks, which is believed to be a communication tool to access the spirt world.

Dia’s work has been exhibited all over West African and his works in private collections in Europe, America and Africa.
Dia was born in 1969 in Medina. He lives and works in Dakar Senegal.
