Description

Alexandra Moskalenko is a half French half Russian London-based artist. She loves British culture for its tolerance of eccentric characters, it’s incredible mix of deeply ingrained traditions, and forward-looking creativity.

Many of her subjects are painted on vintage fabric. she is interested in the concept of identity and in what makes a person who they are: nature vs nurture; how an environment can influence who we are and how in turn we can (positively) influence our environment.

She thinks of her work as a celebration of diversity and common humanity and as a reflection of the multi-faceted multicultural society we live in.

She likes to think that her work is at the crossroad of many different international influences and genres, where Russian icons, Old Master paintings, the work of artists and musicians of the 70s, 80s and 90s (think big shoulder pad, hip hop culture or the New Wave movements), the work of artists such as Chagall, Klimt or Picasso, and the work of African and Afro-American artists (Omar Victor Diop, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Basquiat) co-exist and merge in a permanent cycle of reinventions and reinterpretations.
