From time to time, I like to visit Old Spitalfields market in the city of London for inspiration, to get a buzz and generally see what is new from a creative perspective in arts and crafts.
The Old Spitalfields market, is considered to be one of the newest markets in the city of london, which started life donkey years ago in the thirteenth century as a market in a field next to St Mary Spittel on the edge of the Square Mile, according to the City of London
Spitalfields market is a great place to visit on a day out, to shop for those unique items, ranging from vintage and contemporary clothing, leather goods, fancy dress stores, Art Deco furniture and decorative pieces for the home.
There is also a good variety of food on offer, which includes dim sum at Keke, which is absolutely divine, crepe from Crêpeaffaire where you can have sweet or savoury crepe filled with fillings of your choice and Las Iguanas for south american cusines and amazing latin classic cocktails.
Here are some of my highlights from my day out, which I thought I should share.
Café Art
A great creative initiative showcasing photography and art created by the homeless and people subject to social vulnerability. The art and photography from this project can be found in over 20 London Cafés who gave up there wall space for free to support this initiative. A number of homeless people were given cameras to take photographs around London as part of a competition and the final collection was used to create a 2015 calendar which you can purchase for £9.99.
Through this initiative, a number of homeless people discovered they were good at photography and have pursued it further. I think this is a great idea and a fantastic way to use creativity to provide support, encouragement and boost self esteem for those who may feel socaully excluded.
Little baby bundle company
I was drawn to the cuteness of the miniature items for a new born and loved the artistic creation of crafting baby clothes and soft toys into layers of cake and bouquet of flowers. Baby socks where also moulded into cup cakes that look delicious to eat. Prices range from £9.99 for cute cup cakes to £99.99 for a 5 tier cake of cute baby gifts. Love it:)
Last, but not the least is this stall that makes coasters out of square wall tiles using vibrant colours with different musical instruments on them, which was inspired by the trader’s love for music. He also has some pop art on them. These are unique ideas for Christmas presents.
Here are the four coasters that followed me home, at the cost of a very well spent £10. These will definitely add a splash of colour to my black and white décor.
On this occasion I was a little bit underwhelmed. Even one of the traders said it was a bit slow. However, this could be due to the fact I went on a Saturday and late in the afternoon. The Sunday market is the busiest day of the week, with record number of people in attendance. That’s it for now:)
